An Iron Age city's neighbors will range from Bronze through to Early Middle Ages, as neighbors shift as one goes up in ages.Arc goods are cheap for anyone in Future Era. If your guild is helpful, someone will be able to just hand you the goods for free. Trade them 1 Iron Age good for 2 Future goods, and you’ll only need a few hundred iron (or whatever) to build your Arc. If no one in your guild is helpful, just buy the goods off a guildmate or goods seller. Diverse units. While there's no one-unit-to-rule-them-all situation in the age, the units are still pretty good. Picking the right army to face a defense keeps things interesting for me - and there's some utility to manual battle as well. Sub Cruiser + Rogues is my low attrition/default setup that works against most things.

The best possible way to combat an 8 trebuchet defense is to use 8 mounted archers, as the 8 mounted archers can go first and take out 4 trebuchets on the first turn.
